Anatomy

About the department

Anatomy is primarily the scientific study of the morphology of the human body. It is subdivided into gross anatomy, microscopic anatomy, developmental anatomy and neuroanatomy. Gross anatomy is the study of anatomical structures that can be seen by the naked eye, whereas microscopic anatomy is the study of minute anatomical structures. This evolves into the field of histology, which is the study of the organization of tissues at all levels. Anatomy is recognized by Nile College as one of the key medical sciences in addition to physiology (study of function), and biochemistry (study of the chemistry of living structures) for students studying medicine. Knowledge of anatomy is required for all doctors (especially surgeons) in addition to students of radiology, medical laboratory sciences, dentistry, and other students of biological sciences.

On completion of the medical education and training program, the medical graduate should have a working knowledge and understanding of:

  1.  The normal structure, function, and development of the human body and mind.
  2.  The interactions between body and mind at all stages of life, and to understand the factors that may lead to abnormalities.

Main areas of study covered:

  1. Gross anatomy of the body systems and organs
  2. Microscopic anatomy of the body systems, organs and tissues
  3. Developmental anatomy
  4. Neuro-anatomy
  5. Imaging anatomy

About the department:

Pathology department is concerned about teaching pathology as a basic and back bone science in medicine. Pathology is an essential science for many colleges those includes: Medicine, Dental, Pharmacy, MLS, and Nursing programs. Teaching pathology needs theoretical lectures as long as practical work, like looking at slides in the microscope, were by the student should be able to differentiate between the morphology of normal tissue and cells and the diseased ones. The Pathology curriculum have three parts; First part, which is taught in the third year, is general pathology including an introduction on general microbiology and the infectious diseases that are a major source of morbidity and mortality here in The Sudan. Second and third parts, clinical systemic pathology I &II, taught in continuity in forth year, concerning about understanding and correlating the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings and the proper use of investigations to diagnose common disorders in different organs and systems.

About the department

The medical microbiology course will give the students a solid grounding in all aspects of microbiology, enabling you to understand the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and control of infectious diseases.

Medical microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Students will study microbes at a cellular level and learn about their interactions with higher organisms, including the ways in which microbes cause disease, the spread of infections through a population, and strategies for preventing and treating diseases caused by microbes.

The course of Medical Microbiology consists of Bacteriology, virology, and mycology with emphasis on classification, structure and role in health and disease. The aim of the course is to provide the students with both the theoretical foundation and the practical skills necessary for the management of microbial diseases during their medical practice.

Research activities

Prevalence of Extended Spectrum ß-lactamase Enzymes (ESBLs) and common genotypes among Enterobacteriaceae family in Sudan

Enterobacteriaceae-producing extended spectrum ß-lactamase enzymes (ESBLs) are a clinical threat and have been associated with increased mortality in patients with severe infections. The prevalence of ESBL producers is rapidly increasing in Sudan.

Together with the Institute of endemic diseases, university of Khartoum, we are conducting a study to investigate the prevalence of ESBLs among

Enterobacteriaceae family and to study the prevalent genotypes in different regions in Sudan.

1. About the department

The term community medicine came into reality in 1968 in England when it was instituted by an Act of Parliament in every medical school. Since then it possessed a growing global interest as it encompasses the previously known concepts and elements of the public health, preventive medicine, community health and social medicine sciences. As well the term is used interchangeably with “Family Medicine”. Community medicine is being recognized by Nile College as one of the key dimensions of its mission “dedication to community development through sound policies, provision of high quality educational and service resources as well as upholding multi-cultural values and heritage”.

Therefore the department, aims at producing a community oriented medical graduate who is able to:
1. Interpret and conceive community medicine as an integral part of other medical and health sciences.
2. Analyze the social determinants of health including but not limited to culture, values, moral, ethics etc and how they link to the wellbeing of an individual & the community in general.
3. Use scientific approaches and tools with focus on epidemiological studies, community based research and routine information systems to identify the major health problems in the community and set appropriate interventions/ programs to overcome these problems including organizing appropriate health services with focus on primary health care.
4. Act as a proactive team player and as an agent of change in his/her society.
5. Act as an educator and teacher.

Main areas of study covered

The teaching programme covers the following areas:
1. Basic epidemiology and biostatistics
2. Prevention & control of prevalent diseases
3. Primary health care interventions in response to the context of Sudan
4. Concept of Family medicine emphasizing PHC
5. Principles of Health Management based on district health
6. Student’s Projects on “Research for Public Health”
Research interests & activities
Research for health is an ever growing science that’s central, not only to improving the health of population but to economic growth and development of all countries. Building indigenous capacities at all levels is the main strategy to develop research in a country. Recognizing this, COMD emphasizes research as part of the teaching programme as well as it looks at partnering opportunities with interested national/international academic, service provider and specialized research institutes focusing on “ improving programmes implementation through embedded research” with the objective of improving health systems and overall population’s health.

2. Department staff

COMD is still at its infancy stage of development. It has one full time staff as associate professor, one part-time as assistant professor and one teaching assistant. Recruitment of more staff is under process.
As the teaching programme is based in major areas on national /international health interventions addressing priority health problems , the COMD usually seeks contributions from national programme managers or international experts working for specialized agencies such as WHO and UNICEF.

3. Research activities

Students of fifth year have been guided to develop small scale research projects in public health. Eight projects were selected by students who worked in groups of seven to eight members. The experience was successful and was assessed by an external assessor.

4. External relations

Currently, the department has joint activities with Ministry of Health trying to introduce public health programmes in the teaching curricula. Example is integrated management of childhood illnesses. Other agreements with national and international institutes is under process.

5. Department activities

As the department has recently recruited full time staff, therefore it has not yet established extra-curricular events. However students have joined health days in villages and squares in rural Khartoum.
