Hematology and immunohematology Department

The Hematology and immunology department is concerned with the theoretical concepts and detailed knowledge as applied in laboratory tests.

The hematology part stresses the theoretical and practical aspects of diseases of the blood such as the anemias, leukemias and bleeding disorders.

The patients with such diseases need to be diagnosed by specific laboratory tests.

Diseases such as allergies and autoimmune conditions require immunological knowledge that makes sense of the tests used in clinical laboratories. This is a fast-growing area of the laboratory sciences including research of immunological diseases, cancer and the development of immunization materials and protocols.

This department also teaches the basics of molecular biology.

Clinical Parasitology & Entomology Department

The Department of Parasitology & Entomology is concerned with an important category of disease that affect individuals and can be spread by vectors such as flies, mosquitos, snails & sometimes domestic animals or wild life. Diseases such as malaria and bilharzia and kalazar affect thousands of people. These are just a few examples.

In many parts of the world parasitologists and entomologists are in high demand.

The world Health Organization is highly concerned with these diseases.

Professor A.M. El Hassan, one of the founders of Nile University, was a world authority on Leishmaniasis.

Medical Microbiology Department

The Department of Medical Microbiology is concerned with identification of microorganisms that cause disease. These can be viruses, bacteria or fungi. Students are required to grasp the characteristics and classifications of these organisms so as to identify and diagnose infectious diseases and epidemics.

The work of the microbiologist is the corner stone for management and prevention of infectious diseases.

Professor Elsheikh Mahgoub, one of the founders of Nile University, is a world authority on mycetoma.

Histopathology & Cytology Techniques Department

The department of histopathology & cytology techniques tackles a major area in the diagnoses and management of a vast variety of diseases involving all the systems of the body. Surgical and therapeutic decisions are made on the basis of laboratory tests using histopathological or cytological techniques.

These techniques are themselves subject to innovation. Many pathological conditions have been discovered by developing new techniques.

A major area for use of histopathology and cytology is in research laboratories.

Clinical Chemistry Department

The clinical Chemistry Department uses knowledge and laboratory skills for measuring blood and body fluids biochemical constituents.

It is a physiological fact that the chemical and biochemical components of these fluids are kept within a narrow range of variation or “normal range”. Measuring these values discovers departures from the normal and leads to the diagnosis of organ diseases such as the liver, the lungs or kidneys

Another area that has been developing fast is the field of endocrinology. The measurement of hormones by highly sensitive tests discovers diseases of endocrine glands.
