Message from the Head of Department

We welcome the new fifth year to the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In addition to teaching and learning the Department is engaged in providing services for women in hospitals and Health Centres.

Our specialty is a unique one. We care for mothers and the newborns. We respond to Obstetric emergencies and normal childbirth. The Gynaecology part deals with disorders of the reproductive system in women and with the problems of infertility and birth control so this specially is both exciting and lifesaving.

The Courses

The courses of Obs/Gyn are offered in the fifth and sixth years.

Teaching and learning; This takes place in the class rooms, Skills lab, Hospitals and Health centres.

Research interests

Department members participate in the activities of Professional & Research activities both locally and abroad. The department contributes regularly in supervising students research projects. The following are some examples of these projects;

Complications of teenage pregnancies.

Assessing Clients satisfaction regarding Family Planning. A cross-sectional study at 3 Heath Centres in East Khartoum.

Pathophysiology and complications of Pre-eclampsia in a hospital setting

Partners’ Social responsibility

Members of the department serve in government hospitals, taking emergency duties and caring for inpatients as well as running outpatients’ clinics.

The Department is responsible for antenatal care services at a semi-rural health center, where regular clinics are attended by pregnant mothers

The department Recourses and facilities 

the department is well-equipped and uses modern methods of teaching. The lecture rooms and Skills’ laboratory are spacious and comfortable. The skills’ lab. is equipped with the instruments and equipment necessary for the practical and clinical skills training.

The Curriculum and textbooks

The curriculum is updated regularly to reflect the changing undergraduate medical curricula internationally to fit with the changing diagnostic and management protocols in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The curriculum delivered into 4 Semesters. Two semesters in the fifth year and the other two semesters completed by the end of the final year.

The textbooks recommended by the department include Obstetrics by Ten Teachers and Gynaecology by Ten Teachers for those who want to pursue British postgraduate training and to sit for British licensure exams. For those who want to sit for the American licensure exams ( USMLE), we recommend that they become familiar with the American textbooks Williams Obstetrics and its companion Williams Gynecology

In addition to four exams following the four semesters, there are continuous assessment methods throughout the last 2 years including logbooks and portfolios tasks
